A birth plan is an opportunity to reflect on what is important to your family for the birth of your baby. In it, you can note down your preferences, expectations and needs, after learning about the different options and talking with the healthcare professionals supporting your pregnancy.

More than a document, the birth plan is a communication tool. It helps the team get to know your family better, what you value and how you would like to experience labour and birth, as long as clinical conditions allow.

It is important to remember that birth is a dynamic and sometimes unpredictable process. Therefore, the birth plan needs to be flexible. It can be changed throughout pregnancy or even during labour, if new circumstances arise or if you change your mind. Adapting your plan does not mean you have failed; it means that decisions continue to be made in an informed way and in line with what is safest for you and your baby.
