One of the questions that arises when your bump starts to show more clearly is whether it is time to completely renew your wardrobe. The good news is that, in most cases, there is no need to do so.
Do I need to buy maternity clothes?
Last updated 17 August 2026
During the first few months, many women can continue to wear most of the clothes they already have. Looser dresses, leggings, oversized shirts, stretchy knits or trousers with a more comfortable waistband can keep you going for several weeks. When you start to feel the need for more space, it is often enough to choose an item one size up or adapt some of the clothes already in your wardrobe.
If you have family members or friends who have recently become mothers, it can also be a great opportunity to borrow a few items. Besides being a budget-friendly option, it is a more sustainable way to navigate this phase.
Rather than wearing "maternity" clothes, the important thing is to choose clothes that make you feel comfortable, do not press on your belly or restrict your movement. As your body changes, it also deserves to feel free to embrace these transformations.
Before buying new clothes, try reorganising your wardrobe. Many women find they already have items that perfectly suit the early stages of pregnancy. If you do need to buy specific clothes later on, do so gradually and only as your needs arise.
