Just as you prepare the bag with the baby's clothes, you can prepare a small “Magic Bag” with items that help you create comfort and manage the sensations of labour.

Do you remember the birth rehearsal? This is the bag where you can put the items you used during the rehearsals, which will help to bring back the positive emotions you imagined (it really works) believe us.

What you see

  • Battery-operated lights/candles to create softer lighting
  • A photograph that brings you a sense of security or happy memories
  • A special/familiar item
  • Phone/tablet to watch a series, images or visualisations to help you relax
  • An eye mask because sometimes it really helps not to see anything at all!

What you smell

  • A scent/perfume that you associate with comfort
  • An essential oil that you already know and whose scent is pleasant to you

What you hear

  • A playlist prepared for different stages of labour
  • A podcast or audiobook for the early stages
  • Guided meditations/visualisations
  • Portable speaker

What you feel

  • A blanket or other item with a familiar texture
  • A small ball for massage/pressure
  • A wooden comb for pressure
  • A scarf or rebozo
  • A Pilates ball, if the maternity unit does not provide one
  • Heat/cold packs
  • A TENS machine if you wish to use one

What you taste

  • Water bottle with a straw
  • Drinks (tea, coconut water, or other)
  • Honey

It is important that this bag is planned as a couple because there will be moments during labour when the woman probably won't be able to put into words what she needs. If the person accompanying her knows the items and her preferences, they will be able, even in silence, to support her when contractions are at their most intense, or when it is necessary to bring back feelings of comfort and security.
