Pregnancy is much more than a baby

When we think about the first weeks of pregnancy, it is natural to only imagine a tiny baby growing. But, in reality, your body is building so much more than that.

During this phase, extraordinary structures begin to form

These will protect, nourish and support your baby throughout your pregnancy. We are talking about the placenta, the umbilical cord, the sac and the amniotic fluid. Although they are still very small, they already play an essential role in your baby's development.

The placenta deserves a special mention. We like to imagine it as a great tree. Its "roots" attach to the uterus and, through the umbilical cord, deliver the oxygen and nutrients your baby needs to grow.

The placenta is a temporary organ created exclusively for pregnancy

Something that often surprises many families is that, in most cases, the mother's blood and the baby's blood do not mix directly. The placenta acts as a truly intelligent filter: it allows oxygen, nutrients and many important substances to pass through, while helping to protect your baby from many others.

It is so extraordinary that it produces hormones, nourishes your baby, removes waste and helps to protect them throughout pregnancy. After the birth, its mission is complete and it is also delivered, in what is called the delivery of the placenta.
