In the first days of breastfeeding, it is common for your nipples to feel more sensitive. While you and your baby learn how to breastfeed, you may feel a slight discomfort at the start of the feed, which usually eases as the baby starts to suckle effectively.

To help protect the skin of your nipples, you can let a small drop of breast milk dry after the feed and allow your nipples to air-dry whenever possible. It is also important to wear a comfortable bra and avoid prolonged dampness caused by very wet breast pads. If you feel the need, some specific breastfeeding creams can provide comfort, but the most important thing is to ensure that the baby has a correct latch.

Breastfeeding should not cause intense pain throughout the entire feed.

  • If the pain persists;
  • If deep cracks develop;
  • Bleeding;
  • If the nipple turns white or very misshapen;
  • or if there is intense burning;

it is important to seek help from a professional with experience in breastfeeding. In most situations, there is an identifiable cause and solutions that allow you to continue breastfeeding comfortably.
