The first movements...
Last updated 17 August 2026
Feeling your baby move for the first time is one of those moments you will hardly ever forget. Some women describe it as tiny butterflies, others as air bubbles, a gentle touch or a little "fish" swimming around. As the weeks go by, these movements will become more noticeable and, little by little, you will begin to recognise your baby's unique rhythm.
At this stage, there is no set number of movements you need to count. The most important thing is to start getting to know your baby. Just as every person has their own personality, each baby also has their own pattern of activity. Some are more active in the morning, others prefer the end of the day, and that is perfectly normal.
It is also natural that you might not always feel the movements in the same way. Your daily activity, the position you are in, or simply being distracted can make you notice them less. When you pause for a moment and pay attention, you will often notice movements that had gone unnoticed.
Use these moments to bond with your baby. Talking to them, placing your hands on your tummy, or simply spending a few minutes feeling them can become a little ritual of calm and connection for both of you.
