Labour pain is multifactorial. This means it doesn't only depend on the intensity of the contractions or the dilation of the cervix. Your brain interprets what is happening in your body, also taking into account the environment, your emotions, past experiences, your sense of safety, and your perception of control.
Fear, insecurity, and tension can increase the experience of pain. Therefore, understanding what is happening and feeling that you remain safe, respected, and supported are not just details of a positive birth experience: they are part of the care.
